Be honest.
If someone pointed at your electrical panel right now — the one behind the locker, not the brochure shot — how long before you stall?
That pause is what Day 1 is for.
Day 1 is the Engineering Audit
YachtTrain is a week on your boat. Your marina. Your lines. Sail cat, power cat, or motor yacht in that 40–100 ft range. Usually two owners and one captain, becoming a crew.
Docking Without Talking is the signature of the week. You already know that story.
This post is Day 1: the Engineering Audit.
No docking drills yet. First we walk the systems on this hull so you know what you own.
What we walk
Bow to stern. Hands on. Not a YouTube chapter. Touch it.
- Power chain — batteries, shore power, inverter/charger, genset if she’s got one. Where does the power start, and what kills it?
- Propulsion — engines (or pods / saildrives / shafts), raw water, filters. The parts that decide whether you leave the dock.
- Life support — freshwater, blackwater, AC, bilges.
- Rig / cat-specific — whatever this boat has that a school boat never taught you.
- Safety — extinguishers, EPIRB, the gear you need to find in the dark.
We also cover Dock Talk inside that walk: cleats, lines, knots, fenders, shore power, rinse. Useful. Not the whole day.
The gate
End of day: Walk five systems with no long hesitation.
Not perfect. Not a Coast Guard license. Not a classroom card.
You can find them, say what they do, and not freeze while your partner watches.
Day 2 is throttle and turning the boat on a point. We don’t start that until you can find the light switch.
Gated days exist so nobody keeps up by nodding.
Why this day matters
Most couples who book YachtTrain are buying the dream first and meeting the systems binder second.
You get USCG-licensed captains and a bench behind the week. YachtTrain is the training week. Premium Captains is the desk. We’ve done this since 2013. South Florida, Virginia Beach / Hampton Roads, VA, or we come to the boat.
A check-ride afternoon does not replace knowing where your bilge pumps live.
Insurance wants a sign-off letter on this hull. Day 1 is where that competence starts.
One clarity note: YachtTrain’s New Owner Certification means our coaching sign-off — not a USCG captain’s license. If you need classroom paper, we’ll point you at a school. You still need this week on your boat.
Your turn
When you got the keys, which system did you tell yourself you’d learn later?
Text us the make, length, and marina. We’ll tell you what Day 1 looks like on your layout.
