Owner Yacht Training in Virginia Beach

You bought the boat, and it lives somewhere with aircraft carriers for neighbors. Good news: nothing makes you pay attention at the helm quite like a gray ship the size of a zip code.

YachtTrain now operates out of Virginia Beach as well as Fort Lauderdale. We teach owners on their own catamaran or motor yacht, roughly 40 to 100 feet, in a six-day week on your own boat after closing.

What the training is

  • After closing, on your boat. Not a classroom, not a borrowed boat. The helm you'll actually use.
  • Six days. Docking, close-quarters handling, systems, navigation, and the everyday decisions nobody covers during the sale.
  • Insurance. Many policies restrict owner helm until training, and some require a captain aboard for a period, often a year. That's a common condition, not a universal one. A week of training insurers commonly accept for sign-off can often help satisfy it, depending on the insurer, so check your own policy or ask your agent.
  • Need a captain first? Our sister company Premium Captains has a base here too and can put a captain aboard while you wait for training or for your insurer.

Why here makes a good classroom

  • The Elizabeth River is a working river: current, commercial traffic, and plenty of practice holding a line while something larger goes by.
  • Mile Zero. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway officially starts in Norfolk, so this is a natural place to learn the habits you'll use heading south.
  • The Chesapeake Bay and the Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Open water, real chop, and a structure you pass through in marked channels alongside ships. It's navigation practice with consequences you can see.
  • Navy security zones. Warships around Norfolk carry security zones. Learning to read them, keep clear, and listen to the radio is part of operating here, and a useful habit anywhere.
  • Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets. Smaller inlets that can shoal, which teaches you to trust current local conditions over an old chart.

FAQs

Can I do the training before I close?

No. Training happens after closing, on your own boat.

Will this get me off the captain requirement?

It can often help satisfy it, but your insurer decides. Check your own policy or ask your agent before you book.

Do you train on catamarans and motor yachts?

Both, roughly 40 to 100 feet.

What time of year do you train here?

Chesapeake weather has opinions, especially in winter. Text us when you close and we'll tell you what timing makes sense.

What if the weather is bad during my week?

Weather decides. We'd rather move a day than teach docking in conditions nobody should dock in, and we can't promise specific dates in advance.

My boat is heading south anyway. Should I train here or in Fort Lauderdale?

Either can work. You can train here first, or have Premium Captains run the boat south and train in Fort Lauderdale. Tell us your plans and we'll talk it through.
