After closing, many policies won’t clear you to helm. Here’s the fork.

You closed.

Keys. Wire. Congrats texts. The boat is yours.

Then underwriting finishes the thought.

For many of the cats and yachts we work with in South Florida, the policy is not finished when the closing binder is. It often arrives with a practical limit: owners are not cleared to operate until training documentation is on file — a boat insurance sign-off, in the language people use after the champagne.

A common underwriting condition we see is a professional captain required on board for at least a year — 365 days on record. Not every carrier, not every boat, not a law of the sea. But regularly enough that owners discover, post-close, that they bought the boat and not yet the right to take the helm.

That leaves a fork.

Path A: Ride along for a year while someone else runs your boat. Path B: Documented on-your-boat training that insurers commonly accept for sign-off.

YachtTrain is Path B — and it starts after you own the boat. Always. We do not train you on a sales demo and pretend that transfers at closing.

It is a 6-day yacht training week on your own vessel (sail cat, power cat, or motor yacht, roughly 40–100 ft), usually two owners and one captain, Fort Lauderdale / South Florida or we come to the boat. Close-quarters control, crew roles on *this* hull, systems familiarity the skills carriers commonly look for when they ask for a sign-off. Not a classroom sticker that never met your thrusters.

Subject to your insurer accepting the training and sign-off documentation, that week can often help clear or satisfy the captain-on-board condition that would otherwise run a full year. It is not a guaranteed waiver — carriers differ — but for many of the boats we work with, it is the practical alternative to 365 days of professional helm.

Brokers already know the awkward chair after delivery: keys in hand, policy may still want a captain, and nobody wants the first owner dockings to become a claim. Pointing the new owner at training insurers commonly accept for sign-off is how the handshake stays useful past the handshake.

Closed. Policy wants training — or a long stretch with a captain. You want to run your own boat.
